# Generate a CLI

> Generate an installable CLI package and Agent Skills from an OpenAPI specification.

# Generate a CLI

Use generation when an API specification and reviewed product tasks need to become
an agent-facing CLI and Agent Skills.

## Describe and review

```bash theme={null}
inter generate setup --name my-api --openapi ./openapi.json --target cli \
  --model provider/model-name --credential-env MODEL_API_KEY
```

Edit `.intermesh/generations/my-api/generation.json`. Describe the product and only
the tasks users need. Preview it with `inter generate run --name my-api --dry-run`.

## Generate

```bash theme={null}
inter generate run --name my-api
```

Intermesh checks that every task maps to the OpenAPI before building. Unsupported
or ambiguous tasks stop with task-specific guidance; update the same file and rerun.

Generation requires an explicit provider/model selection and its named credential variable. OpenAPI
and task inputs are sent to the selected provider for analysis and generation. The generated source, installable tarball,
and summary remain under `.intermesh/generation/outputs/`.
